What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami

I have about 30 pages left and I probably won't finish it. I am going to read some of his fiction next, though. The book was very well written, for sure. Insightful and inspirational, at times. It just so happens that what he talks about when talking about running isn't what I want to read about when I read about running.

Mies van der Rohe Post Office Redesign

For the past several years my artwork has been a study of the relationship between simple design elements - geometric and organic shapes, color, repetition, etc. I became interested in feng shui to add function to strictly aesthetic painting and design. By function, I mean potential enhancement of positive energy flow through interior decoration. The more I studied feng shui, the more interested I became in the exterior and structure of buildings as well. Naturally, it should all work together.

I developed a final project with my feng shui teacher, Laurie Pawli, for certification. For this project, I will re-design 3 spaces taking into account exterior materials and environmental factors, interior enhancements and considerations, as well as the original architect/artist/designer's intentions.

I stopped by this week to get some initial impressions and photographs for reference. It's been some time since I've been in the vicinity. I'm a huge fan of Mies van der Rohe's design so I'm very excited to research the history and intention of his for this building. Clean, simple, minimal is my favorite.

The first step is a thorough assessment of the dimension of the building, bagua layout, materials listing, etc. I'll also revisit the site to take notes on the surrounding buildings in association to the post office, and some general notes of flow of traffic and flow of people. I'll be posting notes and sketches here as I work through the project.

The best thing about flowcharts..

I've made a lot of flowcharts over the past couple weeks at work - I love this. I'm crazy about organizing processes and data. One of my very favorite things about the flowcharts is taking the labels off and looking at the design that happens because of the process. A good process will create a good design. Let's look at a couple from last week. I must admit, I think these are pretty darn cool looking even if the process isn't perfect.

The one below is nice, but definitely looks like silos of action feeding into a single point and then being distributed. Doesn't look like an efficient process. I smell bottleneck.

Check out the one below. In the bottom half, there's a lot more stuff going on over on the right side. The design doesn't communicate an even balanced process.

So, obviously, these are not final process charts, but it's cool what assessments can be made about a potential process with the labels off. wheeeeeeeeee!

Rapidiograph Apples

In my last apple blog post, I'd started thinking about backgrounds and composition. I stepped back from that. I'm really enjoying just drawing and not creating anything finished with these.

Here are a couple more sketches. I like this style.. Maybe even more than the color pencil drawings. Been drawing some bananas and pears too, but I like to keep with the apples as a common denominator.

Russian Political Constructivism Art T-shirt

This T-shirt depicts some of the colorful cubist hallmarks of Russian constructivism.

Constructivism was an artistic and architectural movement that originated in Russia from 1919 onward which rejected the idea of "art for art's sake" in favor of art as a practice directed towards social purposes.

Apple Drawing / Soft Ground Etching Combo

I had been thinking about possible backgrounds for the apple drawings when I came across an old soft ground test from an etching I'd done years ago. I decided to use the apples and the etching as design elements to create a simple composition.

I was beginning to think I'd gone off the deep end taking up a fruit drawing study after a solid year and a half of painting very heavily graphic compositions. I'm realizing the potential of using more natural, less rigid shapes to create graphic compositions. I'm pretty excited to see how this evolves!
